COMBATTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL ONLINE
The role of cloud infrastructure providers
CISPE’s position on Commission’s CSAM proposal
CISPE fully supports the Regulation’s intentions and ambitions. However, CISPE and its members wish to highlight the unique role of cloud infrastructure in the fight against Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). Cloud infrastructure providers cannot – for technical, but also legal and operational reasons – moderate content stored on their customers’ systems. Understanding this reality is critical to ensure cloud infrastructure providers are not allocated responsibilities they are not capable of fulfilling. We stand ready to discuss these concerns in greater detail with co-legislators.
A replay of the Terrorist Content debate
- This is not the first time the European Commission wants Cloud Infrastructure Providers to fulfil a role that they are not suited to do.
- Several years ago, during a similar debate around Terrorist Content, CISPE has developed videos and other educational materials to explain why cloud infrastructure providers are ill-suited to remove – or indeed detect – specific pieces of data, whether it is CSAM or Terrorist material.
